The 4th Global Infrastructure Basel Summit // 16.05.2014

Global Infrastructure Basel (GIB) is the world’s leading platform for the financing of sustainable infrastructure. With the support of the Swiss Government, the 4th GIB Summit will take place at the Basel Congress Center on 21st and 22nd May 2014.

Following on from far-reaching global decisions on future Climate Action (UNFCCC), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Sustainable Energy for All (SE4A) and the post-crisis architecture of financial markets, the 4th GIB Summit will set the course for further action with its theme Mainstreaming Sustainability in Infrastructure Financing and Investment.

Subsequent to the 3rd Summit in 2013, the discussions on the GIB platform have leapfrogged to a whole new phase by identifying three main topics and possible solutions to barriers hindering this mainstreaming process: Removing the bottleneck faced by greenfield projects through early-stage financing; Establishing sustainable infrastructure as an asset class; and Creating a sustainable infrastructure grading and credit rating.

The Summit will provide a platform for a distinguished multi-stakeholder group to discuss possibilities and solutions to making infrastructure more sustainable in an environmental, societal and financial way. Participants will include high-level city representatives, experts on sustainable infrastructure from around the globe, and investors (pension funds, impact investors, venture capital funds and banks, as well as multilateral development banks such as the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank). During the Summit, approximately 50 infrastructure projects with an overall investment sum of more than USD 6 billion will be presented. City delegates from around the world will showcase ground-breaking projects during three Investment Forums.

By integrating sustainability into existing infrastructure investment practices, GIB aims to mitigate global challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity and urbanisation. Furthermore, it proposes a solution to the financial constraints faced by public bodies, which are all the more evident during the current public austerity measures. Sustainable Infrastructure projects, selected with the help of the GIB Sustainable Infrastructure Grading system, will be pitched to investors during Investment Forums and an online matchmaking platform will ensure that project initiators and investors can meet face-to-face.
